Hobbit Names and Release Dates Confirmed

Although production started a while back, the official titles and release dates of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films has been up in the air. No longer. The two hobbit films, which are currently under production, will be released one year apart.
The first film will be released December 14, 2012 and will be entitled: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
Its sequel, opening December 13, 2013, will be called “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.”

We’ve known for a while now about rumors that Saoirse Ronan would possibly be playing a role in The Hobbit. We know that she would be playing Itaril, a character who who never existed in the book. Here’s how a casting call describes her character:

[ITARIL] FEMALE, A WOODLAND ELF, this character is one the Silvan Elves. The Silvan Elves are seen as more earthy and practical. Shorter than other elves, she is still quick and lithe and physically adept, being able to fight with both sword and bow. Showing promise as a fighter at a young age, ITARIL was chosen to train to become part of the Woodland King’s Guard. This is the only life she has ever expected to live, until she meets and secretly falls in love with a young ELF LORD. This role will require a wig and contact lenses to be worn. Some prosthetic make-up may also be required. LEAD. AGE: 17-27. ACCENT – STANDARD R.P.

To Hobbit purists, this is grave news. While we can only speculate at this point, don’t expect the film to follow the book to a T.

Hobbit ‘Spy’ Releases First Set Photos

A fan identifying himself as Ringer Spy Mr. Anderson has released photos to theOneRing.net containing our first glimpse at the set for the Hobbit. As you can see by looking at the pictures, they appear to be working on a structure with dwarf-like architecture. Could this be a scene from the Kingdom Under the Lonely Mountain?

First Photo of Hobbit Cast Released

We finally get a look at the assembled cast of the Hobbit. Martin Freeman, who playing Bilbo, is prominently featured to the right. Also featured are: Adam Brown, James Nesbitt, Aidan Turner, Graham McTavish, Richard Armitage, John Callen, Mark Hadlow, Michael Persbrandt, William Kircher, and others.

As filming proceeds there will no doubt be a host of images coming in each day which will be displayed by HobbitCentral.

Hobbit delayed due to Jackson’s surgery

Hobbit director Peter Jackson was admitted last night to Wellington Hospital after complaints of severe stomach pains. There, he underwent surgery for the removal of a stomach ulcer. According to reports, he is expected to make a full recovery, but this comes as one more in a series of delays that has plagued The Hobbit filming. We can only hope that he is able to make a quick recovery.

New app brings Hobbit news to the iPhone

A new iPhone app, One Ring: Lord of the Rings News, allows fans to access articles from theOneRing.net. It offers clean, easy-to-read, formatting as well as the ability to email articles to friends. Another great feature is that it caches pages for offline viewing.

Author Sam Stewart, an avid Tolkien fan, wanted to create a useful tool for others who wanted to keep tabs on Hobbit news from there mobile devices.

Jackson begins scouting for Hobbit locations

With about a month left until filming is scheduled for the Hobbit, director Peter Jackson has been sited with an armada of helicopters searching the New Zealand countryside for filming locations. He was spotted in the South Island areas.

PJ’s assistant, Peter Dravitzki had this to say:

“Locations will be selected ahead of the commencement of principal photography in February 2011. Further details will be available once we’re under way…It goes without saying that we’re all very excited that the unique New Zealand landscape will feature as Middle-earth once again.”

This seems to be an encouraging sign to many who were worried about delays in the Hobbit schedule.

Elijah’s Role Revealed

We’ve known for a while that Elijah Wood would be reclaiming his role as Frodo Baggins, but his part in the Hobbit has been something of a mystery until recently.

Wood’s cameo will come as part of a frame story where Frodo is reliving Bilbo’s experience either by reading or hearing Bilbo’s tale. However it is done, this role appears to be fairly minor.

The roles of Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Cate Blanchett as Galadriel are still a mystery.
